It's been a little over a year since Lady Victoria Gardella Grantworth de Lacy first knew she was a Venator, a hunter of vampires. She learns that a powerful vampire in Italy is close to controlling the souls of the dead, and if he succeeds, the Venators will be facing the toughest challenge ever. As she travels to Italy, she is accompanied by Sebastian Vioget, a man Victoria can't quite trust, a man who splits his time between humans and vampires. As she works her way through the ranks of the Tutela, the protectors of vampires, she is betrayed by those she once considered friends and works alone to destroy the rising power of her mortal enemies.
As sequels go, this wasn't as great as the first. The author has to spend a lot of time leaving questions unanswered to leave room for more sequels. Yet, I still enjoyed it thoroughly. I love that the main character is a woman who is an incredibly strong individual. I enjoyed the book being set in Rome. It was great reading and trying to figure out what will happen next and seeing Victoria becoming more involved with Sebastian. As of now, I'm still a Max fan, but I am leaning a little more towards Sebastian.
