This is the sequel to The Warrior Heir. It follows Joseph McCauley (called Seph), an untrained wizard who cannot control his powers, which leads him into all kinds of trouble. He is sent to a reform school led by a mysterious Gregory Leicester, and at this school all sorts of strange happenings occur. He later meets up with characters from the previous story as they battle to uphold the decisions made by the council in the last novel. I'm not going to tell you what else happens, so you'll have to read the book.
First off, I HATE that the kid goes by Seph! What kind of name is that!?!? It was horrible and it bothered me everytime I had to read it, which unfortunately was a lot since he was the main character.
Secondly, the beginning of this novel was VERY hard to get into. I almost considered not finishing the book, but I really wanted to know how everything would turn out, so I plunged ahead. Thankfully only the first quarter to third of the book was difficult to read. After that, it picked up pace really quickly and I was so excited to read about what would happen next.
I loved the ending a lot (better than the first one), but because the beginning was so horrible, I can't justify giving it a 4 (otherwise I would).
