18. The Last Battle - C.S. Lewis

During the reign of King Tirian, a descendant of Caspian the Seafarer, rumor is spread that Aslan has returned to Narnia. It has been a long time since Aslan has roamed the land and all are excited about his return. The king and his friend Jewel the Unicorn set out in search of the illusive Aslan, the protector of Narnia, and instead they find destruction. Calormene men are tearing up the forest of Lantern Waste, a place that has special meaning to the Narnians. Tirian learns that this is done according to the will of Aslan and can hardly believe it. He soon learns that the Aslan all the Talking Beasts and Calormenes are following is an imposter and asks for help from the real Aslan to rid his land of the evil that has taken over. Eustace and Jill return to Narnia and help Tirian fight in the great last battle of Narnia.
I was a little disappointed with the book. I had read that it earned the Carnegie Medal, one of the highest awards received in children's literature, so I was expecting many great things. True, there were some great parts, I especially enjoyed the scene where Tirian enters the stable and says,
"It seems then that the Stable seen from within and the Stable seen from without are two different places."
"Yes," said the Lord Digory. "Its inside is bigger than its outside."
"Yes," said Queen Lucy. "In our world too, a Stable once had something inside it that was bigger than our whole world."
However, it just wasn't how I expected things to end. I'm glad that these books were chosen for our family book club, because I don't think I ever would have read them otherwise. Overall the series was very good and I can now officially say I have read The Chronicles of Narnia.
Rating: 3.5/5
